Imagine never being to access pictures of your loved ones again. The University of Georgia will
soon face this threat if they do not find a way to support the digitization of its historical footage.
UGA Remastered aims to recreate the archival experience by creating an interactive and informational
iBook for the University of Georgia Special Collections Library.
The University of Georgia Special Collections Library specializes in preserving rare historical material. The collections are housed in both the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies.
For the UGA Remastered project, we focused on the Emmy winning Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection. Founded in 1995, the collection contains over 300,000 titles, including film, video, audiotape, transcription disks, and other recording formats.
The Walter J. Brown Media Archive aims “to preserve, protect, and provide access to the moving images and sound materials that reflect the collective memory of broadcasting and the history of the state of Georgia and its people”.
There are over 15 collections housed in the library with archives dating back to the 1920s. This 30,000 square foot vault contains 24 rows of shelves that are over 32 feet tall. For optimal preservation, the vault is temperature controlled and only accessible to staff.
The Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection is the third largest publicly
accessible broadcasting archive in the country and acquires thousands of collections annually. Preparing
these audio and video collections for use by students, faculty, researchers, documentary filmmakers and others
who use our collections regularly is a time-consuming and expensive task. Donations to the Brown Media Archive
provide much needed funds to preserve at-risk materials, catalog each item so that people know what we have, and
digitize selected assets for online streaming, all of which allow us to share this unique and historical archive
with the world.
